'Stop sharing' to activate USB-to-serial device
on: Nov 9th, 2017, 4:13pm

Software USB over Network version 5.2
running on windows 10 Home

I have a USB-to-serial adaptor (MOXA UPort 1110) connected to the server machine
The server automatically shares the device and it appears at the client after booting the machine.

On the adaptor the "active" LED is not activated and it not possible to use the device. I have to go to the server and stop sharing of the device. The LED then activates and I can now start sharing again. it is now possible to use the device correctly.

how can I prevent this?

Regards Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,

What do you mean by "The server automatically shares the device"? There is no such option besides the manual device sharing or using the rule for device with help of Sharing Rule Manager.
Please clarify.

I mean, the "ftusbserv" (FabulaTech USB over Network (Server Core) service) shares the device automatically on boot.

Hi again,

Please look at my previous statement. There is no automatic device sharing by default.
You are sharing your device manually before your server reboot or you have a rule for device sharing.

okay, then the device is manually shared before shutdown, but it reconnects at startup again.

Is this a behavior something I should not rely on?
-So I should "stop sharing" and then "start sharing" every time?

FYI: I can see that there is also a "sharing rule" added and with-in the action tab the "apply the following action to the device" is checked and "Action persistance" is selected to "permanent"

Hi again,

You can do the following:
1) right click on your usb device in USB over Network (server) GUI and select Advanced Device Sharing...
2) select Until the system restart as Action persistence.

What do you mean by "It will not work"? It work.
I can't confirm your statement regarding "It has the same behavior".
I have the "ready for sharing" status of my usb device in the server GUI after the server reboot.
Ok. Just define a date/time for TeamViewer session and contact me via email (support@fabulatech.com).
I'll check.

Yes, it will show "ready for sharing" on the server and I will also see it connected on the client, but the server did not initialize the device and I can not use it with the client, even if it says it is ready.

After reboot when I, click "stop sharing" on the device, the Moxa USB device activates (the red "active" LED turns on)

1) You wrote "okay, then the device is manually shared before shutdown, but it reconnects at startup again" but "Yes, it will show "ready for sharing" on the server".
>> The status of your device after the server reboot is "ready for sharing" (after enabling the "Until the system restart" option as Action persistence in Advanced Device Sharing section).
2) "it will show "ready for sharing" on the server and I will also see it connected on the client".
>> you can't see it connected on USB over Network (client) GUI. You can't connect unshared (ready for sharing) device on the client side.
3) "but the server did not initialize the device and I can not use it with the client".
>> yes, you can't connect the device on the client side because you must share it on the server side and connect on the client side.
4) "After reboot when I, click "stop sharing" on the device, the Moxa USB device activates"
>> The status of your device after the server reboot is "ready for sharing". You can't "stop sharing" if the device is unshared (ready for sharing). There is no such option available.

Hi Sebastian,

I would advise you to enable two options ("Reset power" and "Reset device on share") on the server side of USB over Network regarding this instruction ("Troubleshooting" section):
