Which USB Drive to backup a virtualised SBS2008?

Hi,

I am looking for suggestions from other users of which USB backup drives they successfully use to backup a virtual SBS2008 (using USB-over-Network).

I've been having problems with Western Digital USB drives when used with USB-over-Network to backup my SBS2008 server which is virtualised on Hyper-V (using the built-in SBS2008 Backup utility). They regularly cause the server to reboot (either the SBS virtual machine, or even the full physical machine!), or the drives don't get detected in SBS backup.

I originally thought it was a problem with USB-over-Network, but I have since found a few others with peoblems with Western Digital drives directly on SBS servers (not virtualised). It would appear that the newer WD drives all have a fancy SES driver which causes the problems with SBS2008.

I'm therefore looking to replace my backup drives with a new make / model, and looking for suggestions from others who have this working correctly with USB-over-Network to backup virtual SBS2008 using the built-in backup utility. I am looking for at least 1.5TB sized, but maybe 2TB drives.

Thanks foryour help and suggestions

Mike

I can recommend you Transcend. We have tested our software with devices and drives from this manufacturer and for now everything work properly.

But anyway I would like to investigate this issue thoroughly. I need to be sure it is not caused by our software. Would you be so kind to send me the following?

1. Memory Dump File (if it was created after reboot). Just in case check this path: %SystemRoot%\MEMORY.DMP

(you can upload it to our ftp ftp://castle.colonet.net/upload/ )

2. The USB over Network log files. Please look for the logs in %systemroot%\system32 folder (or if your PC is x64 then in
%systemroot%\syswow64). The log file names should be:

ftusbsrv.log - for USB over Network Server
ftusbsrvc.log - for USB over Network Client

3. The system information of both PC's where USB over Network (Server and
Client) are installed.
To get system information file  you need to do the
following: Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System
Information File -> Save.

Looking forward to you message.

I completely forgot about your message here, sorry.

However, we finally got this sorted by replacing the "WD Raid USB drive" with a "Seagate Expasion USB drive". All our reboots have dissapeared and backups are completely reliable again. UoN is working flawlessly with the new drive without any configuration needed.

Our other two WD simple backup USB drives (non-raid) are behaving correctly too, so it was only the more complex WD Raid drive (with a SES device driver) that was causing problems. However, I am lead to believe that many of the newer simple WD single drives now have a SES device/driver too, and others are reporting these to have problems with SBS2008 dircetly (ie not in a virtualised environoment with UoN), so I wouldn't recommend buying new WD drives for this purpose in the future.

Apologies I never got to testing your software and getting the logs for you, as I was under pressure to get everything working again as we had no offsite backup for a couple of months.

Thanks for the help.
