USB and Sound  (for a USB-Phone) over RDP

Dear all,

We are working on a few scenario's for a customer.

We have a Windows 2008R2 server with MS Lync 2010 in a Hyper-V role installed.
The Windows 7 client computers are also virtual machines in Hyper-V. (VDI)

We want to connect a USB phone for those those virtual machines.

I've installed USB over the network and redirected my USB phone. That worked, only the sound quality is poor and not usable.

What can we do to fix this? Do we need to install Sound over RDP also?
This seems a bit to much maybe. Is the sound feature also installed in the other product?

Best regards, Robin

Robin,

Sound over RDP should work, however we have some issues with Lync at this point and are trying to resolve them. I'll forward your issue description to our tech guys, they will contact you shortly.

Thanks,

Hello Robin,

Current version of Sound over RDP does not support MS Lync 2010
Our developers are working on this problem.

There is a beta version available here:
http://www.fabulatech.com/sound-over-rdp-beta.zip
So you can try it. It partially fixes the incompatibility. Please check if it works for you.

And let us know the results. Your feedback is very important for us.

Thanks for you support.

The beta driver does not change anything unfortunately. Can you report what the new fixes should do?

The Lab situation we created:

Hyper-V 2008 R2 Server with DC, Lync Server en W7 Clients.
When we connect the Hyper-V enviroment directly to our network, no problems at all with Lync and clients.

We installed on the Virtual W7 client:
Sound over RDP workstation.
USB over network client.

We installed on the phisical client:
Sound over RDP server.
USB over network server.

Phone device tested: Plantronics P540-M & Calisto P240-M

The USB connectivity over the network works OK
The Lync client detect the Plantronics phone

The issues are:
Crackling sound, The lync client warning appears about poor sound quality.
When picking up the phone (earpiece) on the phisical phone we cannot hear any dialtone.
The dial buttons do not work.

Do you have any tips for us?

Best regards, Rob

Dear Rob98,

Thanks for the description of the situation. The obvious reason why Sound over RDP does not work in your environment is the following:

Sound over RDP Workstation must be installed on physical PC where sound device (Plantronics P540-M or Calisto P240-M ) is attached to.

Sound over RDP Server must be installed on Virtual PC (where you RDP to)

Unfortunately you have mixed up Server and Workstation parts of Sound over RDP.
Please try uninstalling Workstation part from Virtual W7 machine and installing Server part there. On physical client uninstall server part and install workstation part.

Please let me know the results.
