Potentially three problems with  UoN v4.6

Hi,

Having a few issues on our server and I think they might be related to our installation of "USB over Network".

1) Western Digital MyBook (Dual Drive Raid1) USB  drive - being shared by UoN as a Windows Backup drive. Crashes the server when connected and either reboots the virtual server or the physical server too. Works fine after the reboot. Suspect this is caused by the UoN software not working correctly with this device (it appears as multiple devices in the USB chain, but oddly all works correctly after the reboot!)

2) We have a "USB to 2x PS/2 sockets" converter interface. Works fine immediately after server reboot, but loses contact until server rebooted. Not required to be shared by UoN, but the drivers seem to be getting skewed into an unknown device by UoN that is only fixed by another server reboot.

3) In an attempt to fix the above, I'm trying to install upgrade to v4.7 but it says:
"There is a problem with this Windows Installer package.
A script required for this install to complete could not be run.
Contact your support personnel or package provider."

Clearly the first thing is to try to solve problem 3) in case the upgrade fixes the other two. I tried the standalone installer from the website too, but that says I need to uninstall the existing package first, but could find no info about that process, so thought it best to stop and ask before making a mess!

Couldn't find anywhere info about implications of uninstalling/reinstalling the software, compared with upgrading. Would prefer to upgrade if we can work out how to make that work.

Environment:

Physical Server: Windows Server 2008 SP2 with Hyper-V manager running 2 Virtual servers. This is where the UoN server software is installed.

Virtual Server 1: SBS 2008 SP2 running the UoN client software to access the USB backup drive (3 drives in rotation).
Virtual Server 2: Server 2008 R2 (but not relevant to these problems).

Thanks for your help

Mike

Hello miked,

Regarding 3rd issue :
This error usually appears because the jscript.dll is not registered in Windows. To register it, perform the following steps:
1. Click Start > Run or hold down the Windows Key and press R.
2. Type regsvr32 jscript.dll.
3. Click OK when the message appears about the registration succeeding. If you receive an error instead, ensure you are logged into Windows as an Administrator.
4. Download and run Microsoft FixIT tool.
http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9648765
5. Make sure UAC is turned off (For Windows Vista/7/ 2008 Server)

And let us know if issue 1 and 2 are solved with 4.7.2b

Thanks

Thanks for the reply.

Sorry I forgot to mention I'd seen and already tried the "regsvr32 jscript.dll" fix... but it didn't make any difference.

I wasn't sure about running the Microsoft FixIT as there was no information about what it does, and wasn't keen to run it on our server without that info. Can you provide more info on what this "fixes"?

Presumably to try the beta, I will get the same message I got when trying to install v4.7 downloaded from the website (as opposed to using the "upgrade" tool inside the software)... i.e. that I "already have the software installed, and to uninstall that version first". If so, what are the implications of this compared to upgrading? Do I lose my existing settings and need to re-enter them, or does it save the settings on this uninstall/re-install?

Thanks for your help...

Yes, this is true. This issue happens when some necessary components that are required for proper installation of our product are disabled or removed (by a firewall or anti-virus).

Microsoft FixIT is a complex tool then registers all necessary components. Please be sure it is completely safe for your system.

Moreover UAC sometimes permits the execution of necessary scripts so we recommend you to disable UAC until the installation is finished.

Re-installation will not preserve all the client's setting but upgrade will.
You can manually export
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\ftusbsrvc\UsbServers
before re-installation and import after it. This will preserve all the client's settings.

Finally got a moment to try the beta.

One thing I should have checked before I started though is where I can find my licence! I merrily uninstalled v4.6 and installed the v4.7.2 beta but I'm now in trial mode until I can track down my licence code! I've got 15 days and counting... Any ideas?

Anyway, the beta seems to have sorted the USB-PS/2 converter problem. It is now correctly detected by your software and handed back to Windows for use. I can now use keyboard and mouse again on the server (rather than having to Remote Desktop in!).

It will take a few weeks to check whether the hard disk problem is solved as it had most troubles with the monthly offsite backup drive (the only one with a built-in Raid array). Will keep you posted of developments.

Thanks for the help

The other thing was that by un-installing and re-installing, I didn't need to use the Microsoft FixIT tool. I was wary of running that on our server, as I'm assuming that those scripting tools are disbaled for a reason... to keep everything locked down and secure! Therefore running a Fixit tool that enables various scripting languages to run correctly on the server with no indication of what they are and therefore how to disable them again afterwards, wasnt something I was prepared to do!

As I said, fortunately un-install and re-install solved that for me. Just need to find my USN over Network licence code now so that I can get out of trial mode...

Please contact sales@fabulatech.com regarding your license.
You will be asked for your order number and some additional details to recover your license code.

Looks like I spoke to soon on that PS/2 converter issue.

The USB-to-2x-PS/2 converter works for a short time after a reboot, and then fails until the server is rebooted again. Under the Beta version, it is at least detected correctly for a while in USB-over-Network (as a GASIA USB device). However, it still fails a short while later and my hunch is that USB-over-Network is the cause of this, but not proven.

There appears to be no way to reset the device once it quits working. Physically unplugging and replugging the GASIA USB device still fails to be detected in USB-over-Network until the server is physically powered off and back on again.

Any ideas of what I can try to troubleshoot this problem? We don't need to share it over the network, just let it pass through correctly to the server to be used.

Regarding the WD drive problem. We had a successful offsite backup this weekend. The only thing we have tried changing is to not "safely remove" the drive in Windows SBS server before unplugging it! That seems to have been causing the drive no end of problems, by causing it to then appear back to the physical host server. Physically powering down the drive (by removing its power lead) then unplugging the USB lead, appears to have stopped it from crashing the server!

As I understand it, this is perfectly safe on an SBS backup drive as it isn't detected by Windows as a drive letter anyway, and as long as the backup has finished, then no data can be lost or corrupted by this "unsafe" removal!

We will monitor the drive on the next offsite backup, to check all is stable with this workaround, but it is looking good so far.

So it looks like the USB-PS/2 converter is probably the only remaining problem. So any ideas on that problem?

Mike

ps I got a copy of the licence from the original email and it installed again fine. Thanks

Probably we can proceed with resolving this issue via email.
We'd like to ask you to send us the following to support@fabulatech.com so we can investigate the issue:
- Some screenshots of the issue (both the server and client sides)
- The system information of both PC's where USB over Network (Server and
Client) is installed. To get system information file  you need to do the
following: Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System
Information File -> Save.
- The USB over Network log files. Please look for the logs in
%systemroot%\system32 folder (or if your PC is x64 then in
%systemroot%\syswow64). The log file names should be:
ftusbsrv.log - for USB over Network Server
ftusbsrvc.log - for USB over Network Client
And please add a brief description of the problem to your message.
