Ports to open for firewall access

Hi all, I am trying to get a "USB over Network" client in my DMZ to access a USB server on my internal network.  I opened port 33000 traffic thru my firewall, so the client software is working, but I cannot actually use any USB device.  I can 'see' the device and connect to it via the client, but I can't actually use the USB device (for example, a USB key disk drive doesn't show up in Local Disks).

I am guessing that there are more ports required for actual USB use beyond 33000?

Any help is MUCH appreciated  Smiley

thx,
Zac

We were able to determine that the issue was not the firewall (opening port 33000 allowed the client to see the server), but it was with the VM itself.

Since ESX doesn't have direct support for USB, by default required USB drivers aren't necessarily going to be installed in a hosted VM.

In my case, to enable the correct use of the redirected USB devices, I had to copy and rename the file usbd.sy_ from the source i386 directory to usbd.sys in the \system32\drivers directory of the VM.  After a reboot it was able to use the USB redirected device.

Hope that helps someone else.

Cheers.

What Operating System is installed there?
Actually our installer copies usbd.sys file there.
May be it just didn't support OS version you use.

Windows Server 2003.

I can confirm that the client install did not copy usbd.sys into the drivers directory.

Does the installaion check for the successful copy of the driver?  It would be nice to see that as an error in the client installation process.

I installed the same 3.4 client on three Windows Server 2003 virtual machines and none of them had the correct driver installed in the correct directory.  I would assume that if you test it, you will find the same thing.

Thanks.

OK, could you please send us that usbd.sys.
1) Is that Win2003 32bit or 64bit?
2) What ServicePack is installed there?
Thanks.

Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition 32-bit with Service Pack 2.

The usbd.sys file we used was file version 5.2.3790.0 which I believe is part of the standard RTM of Windows Server 2003.  If you do need me to send you the file, please let me know how and where.

thx,
Brendan

Hi Brendan,

OK, it seems we almost resolved it.
1. Please send us zipped usbd.sys (to support at fabulatech dot com)
2. Please send us log file of installation process
- VMware without usbd.sys
- launch setup, using MSI's /L*v parameter:
  setup-filename.msi /L*v log.txt
As result it generates log.txt file.

Thanks!
