Title: Unable to Initialize
Post by Nick_Hyma on May 26th, 2006, 7:08am
I'm sharing two serial ports that are connected to two CNC machines to send essentialy text files.  At the remote computer I'm getting an "Unable to Initialize Com Port" in the CAM software used to send the files.  It works probably 30% of the time but when it fails I have to restart both computers to get it working again.  Please tell me what I'm missing.

At first can you please try to do test without network communication on the local computer only (i.e. on PC with NSPK shared serial ports) as below:

1. Share serial port (where your CNC machine is connected to)

2. Add connection on local computer (i.e. create virtual serial port connected to shared port.

3. Open virtual serial port by your CAM software to receive text files from the CNC machine.

What is result for such setup? Does it work correctly?

Thanks for getting back to me.

I geuss We've never needed to recieve programs from the CNC machines.  I tried and I couldn't get it to go.  I played with the port settings and nothing seems to get it to work.  At the CNC control it says it's sending data but at my PC nothing's happening.  Does this tell you anything?

Do you mean that local configuration (i.e. local pair of physical COM port to virtual serial port of Network Serial Port Kit) does not work as well?

It works fine sending data to the CNC, but I can't recieve.    The not recieving thing doesn't bother me since we never do that.

OK, now we need to examine the logs of ports working created by PortMon. Please, use the free PortMon tool (see download link below) to monitor and write logs:

You can download PortMon from our web site:
http://www.fabulatech.com/export-data/portmon.zip

Please make two following tests using PortMon:

1) Your program works with CNC machine directly. And please send us PortMon log of this operation.

2) Your program works with CNC machine over Network Serial Port Kit. Please send two PortMon logs - one from NSPK shared port and the other from remote NSPK port.

Please send all 3 logs to support@fabulatech.com for our examination.

I think I sent the right things over to support.  I sent a file to the CNCs from the local PC, worked fine.  I then sent the same file from the remote PC through NSPK,  worked fine.  Tried it again and got the Unable to Initialize error.  I then went back to the local PC and tried to send the same file and I got the same error.  It seem like when I do get NSPK to work it's a one time deal, then it locks up the physical port I'm sharing.

Yes, we received your logs and our developers examine it already. I will contact you as soon as any results will be.
